Wind Speed and Direction Interface Module

WND / DIN / LPT / ...

Main Features

Can be used to control automatic windows/louvres/dampers in Natural Ventilation applications

Measures Wind speed in Meters/sec, Miles/hour, Knots and Beaufort Force numbers

Measures Wind direction as Degrees and Compass Cardinal points

The average wind speed & direction is calculated over a configurable time period

Interface with Sontay AV-W Series        Weather Station

Installation & Commissioning

Initial Setup

The wind direction input channel should be calibrated before the product is shipped from our factory. If the unit has been successfully calibrated then the status led will light when the module is powered up.

Wind Speed

The wind speed connections (green and black) are connected to input a, the centre pair of terminals, spinning the anemometer will cause the Channel A Led to flash green once per revolution. The module should not need calibration for wind speed but a facility is provided to modify the calibration by +-50% from the factory settings (config variable WCAL).

Wind Direction

The wind direction connections (red and black) are connected to input b, the right hand pair of terminals. Rotate the direction vane clockwise, looking from the top, as the vane gets to North (0 degrees) led channel B will light green, the led will then gradually dim until it extinguishes as the vane passes through South (180 degrees). The Wind Sensor itself should be fitted so that the arm is lined up with north, see Environmental Measurements instructions, however if this is not practical the software allows the wind direction variable to be calibrated to North after the sensor has been installed (see configuration variable DCAL).
The white and black wires are not used and should be made off such that they cannot short out or short to the other connections. The cable screen should be connected to a good earth, away from the electronics as a protection against lightning damage.

Test Values

Knobs 3 (WTST Wind Test) and 4(DTST Direction Test) can be used to force the unit to send preset values for Wind Speed and Wind Direction which will allow Natural Ventilation strategies to be proved to be functioning on site.

Cable length

If the cable between the wind sensor and the SeaChange module is very long the cable resistance will effect the accuracy of the wind direction. This error can be removed by repeating the module calibration routine but placing the short/1K precision resistor at the wind sensor end of the cable. Contact smartkontrols for details of calibration instuctions.

Display on a Zone Controller

If required the wind conditions can be displayed on a zone controller as a user parameter. It is recommended that Sensor 8 is used for this purpose because it combines wind direction displayed as cardinal points, N, NE etc and the wind speed as Wind force numbers (Beaufort scale) which match those given on weather reports.
Put zone into config mode, select the Wind Speed interface using the select button, scroll clockwise through the parameters using the Zone until you find one where the label shows a cardinal indicator N,NE etc. HInt it comes after WBFG. Press start1 and stop1 together, a tick will appear on the display. The zone will now display the wind information.

Broadcast Wind Speed and Direction to the Network

The average Wind Speed and Wind Direction values are sent to the network every minute, certain SeaChange modules have been designed to receive these values and use them to control cooling and air movement in Naturally Ventilated Buildings. Window Controller Actuator submodules (ACTAW4cx) allow the direction and speed of the wind with respect to the orientation of the window to control the maximum opening of the window. Air Handler Controllers will control the Air Flow, and tempering of the air temperature of under floor displacement air systems with due regard to the external temperature and wind conditions.

Daily Plot

The module is setup to log the wind speed (m/sec) and wind direction (degrees) to the two plotting channels every 15 minutes which gives a plot for the last 24 hours.

Registration

The wind sensor is registered and monitored like a zone controller.
