General

The new underfloor heating controller from SC Controls  has been designed to provide independent temperature control of heating zones in underfloor heating applications. The controller operates as an integral part of a SeaChange energy management system to deliver a demand driven environment, ensuring maximum energy saving and repeat performance.  This level of system integration in conjunction with built-in energy saving control strategies will ensure the heating plant and associated pumps are enabled only when a heating demand is received from the underfloor heating zones.

The UFH controller operates in the same way as a standard zone controller and in essence there are 6 zone controllers incorporated into one controller to provide a cost effective solution for underfloor heating applications without compromising on functionality.

Temperature Control

There are 6 channels of temperature control provided for controlling 6 independent underfloor heating circuits.  Each heating channel is provided with a temperature input and a relay output.  The temperature inputs are designed for connecting to a a room sensor (i.e. SEN/PTR/ROM/001), or a thimble sensor depending on your application.  The relay outputs are used to directly control the valve actuators on the manifold.  When the system is documented using the InSite software, the heating channels are shown as 6 independent controllers on InSite.  Each channel is associated with an UFH circuit.

Module Registration

The UFH controller is classed as a zone device and is registered in the same way as other SeaChange zone devices.  Up to 199 underfloor heating controllers can be registered on a single domain system.

Sensor Inputs

The temperature inputs accept a room sensor or a thimble sensor.  The parameter SENN is used to associate a temperature input with an output.  Normally this value would be set to the corresponding relay output (i.e. SENN1=output1, SENN2=output2...etc), but a room sensor can be shared with other heating channels by setting the SENN parameter accordingly.  This feature is used on applications where 2 adjacent heating circuits are controlled from a common room sensor.

Occupancy Time Profile

The heating channels are provided with two time profiles per day as per standard zone controllers.  Each channel is provided with a  seperate built-in 7 day time clock that can be configured via InSite or Doorway.  As an option, you can also associated the underfloor heating controller with a a zone Controller if you wish to provide a common occupancy time profile for all heating zones.  Please note when a zone controller is used to provide the occupancy times, all heating channels will follow the same occupancy time setting determined by the zone controller.  To use the time profile from a zone controller, the UFH controller must be registered to the associated zone controller.

Optimum Start/Stop Routine

Each heating channel is provided with a optimum start/stop routine.  The pre heat period and maximum optimum off hours can be altered via parameters MXOS (knob K4) and MXOF(K5).  These settings can be found under the knobs menu in InSite.

Integration with Heating Plant

One of the main benefits of using a SeaChange underfloor heating controller is the ability to provide a fully integrated and demand based control system.

Heating demands from the UFH zones are collated locally by the controller and passed on to a SeaChange boiler controller or a SeaChange secondary circuit controller to provide a calculated heating flow based on the heating demand received from the UFH manifolds.  This level of system integration will ensure maximum performance and energy savings throughout the heating season.

The calculated heating flow can be provided as a variable temperature (weather compensated ) or as a constant temperature depending on the application.  Collated heat demands are passed on as a percentage demand (VT) or CT using parameters HTSC and HTCT.  For example, if a variable temperature circuit feeding the UFH manifold is controlled by a SeaChange secondary circuit controller H2, the configuration parameters would be set to HTSC=2, HTCT=0.

Temperature Control

The heating channels are provided with self learning and self tuning control loops to ensure accurate temperature control of the UFH circuits.  Each heating channel is provided with a time proportioning (TP) output.

Relay Outputs

The relay outputs can be used to directly control an UFH valve actuator.  If more than one valve actuator is being controlled from the same relay output, we would recommend using a suitable interface relay to avoid damage to the output.  Please note damage caused to the relay output as a result of an electrical short or excess current is not covered by the manufacturers warranty.

Setting up Internal Occupancy Times

To adjust the occupancy times for each channel, click on the controller under the registration structure in InSite and select the channel using the parameter CHNL.  For example, to select channel 1 , set CHNL to 1 and click on the Times menu to read the occupancy time profile for that selected channel.

Time Clock Mode

The heating controller feature a time clock mode that can be used to enable a mechanical plant at a preset period.  A heating channel can be used as a time clock if a sensor is not connected to the sensor input.

Sensor Calibration

The controller features a sensor calibration facility to enable the user to calibrate the sensors, if required.  Sensors can be calibrated by +/-5C using configuration parameter SCAL.

Sensor Plots

The underfloor heating controller is the first SeaChange controller to feature non volatile sensor plots.  This feature will ensure the historic data is maintained in the event of a mains failure.

Other Applications

In addition to controlling underfloor heating circuits, the 6 channel heating controller can be used in other applications to provide automatic temperature control of heating circuits.  Each heating channel provides a self learning control loop, optimum start/stop, fabric protection and a built-in 7 day time clock.
